My 5 Favorite Road Trip Films!

There are so many ways to travel, this past year alone I’ve been on so many planes and cruises which I typically do, not only that but this was also the first year that I finally did the all American road trip across the country. Driving for days on the open road heading nowhere and everywhere came great destinations, interesting pit stops and unforgettable moments.

Even before the trip, I’ve always loved a good road trip movie, they really seem like they capture the comical and dramatic feeling of being in car for hours. That means that today I’m listing some of my favorite films about road tripping in the U.S.A.

5. On The Road (2012) featuring Sam Riley and Kirsten Stewart

Rated: R

An inspiring writer along with his friend and his friend’s intriguing wife have many adventures on the open road. The film is based on the Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel of the same name.

Although this film was poorly rated, it’s still a good film about being on the road in the 50s featuring the famous post war Beat and Counterculture generation.

4.We’re The Millers (2013) featuring Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston.

Rated: R

Small time pot dealer learns how tough the drug dealing business is when he tries to help some teens and ends up losing all his drugs and money. However, he devises a plan to pack a fake family into an RV to the south of the border to get out of the debt he is in with his boss.

This film is so hilarious and is jam packed with one liners you won’t forget. If you haven’t watch this funny film, you’re in for a treat!

3. Due Date(2010) featuring Robert Downing Jr. and Zach Galifianakis

Rated: R

Peter (Robert Downing Jr.) is going to be a dad for the first time and intends to catch a flight to get home to his wife to be there for the delivery, but a chance encounter with an inspiring actor (Zack Galifianakis) gets him thrown out of the plane and in for an adventure with the last person he ever expected.

I have never laughed so hard in my life watching this film. Zack Galifianakis is a true gem in this film and it wouldn’t have been the same with anyone else.

2. Vacation (2015) featuring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate

Rated: R

Rusty Griswold decides to surprise his wife and two sons with a cross country road trip to America’s favorite fun park. Along the way the whole family encounters one misadventure after another in this funny film.

This film is also a great comedy about being on the open road with your family and will get you to reminisce of those fond childhood road trip with your own family.

  1. It Happened One Night(1934) featuring Clarke Gable and Claudette Colbert

The film that won Best Picture at the Oscars way back when is a road trip classic. The story of a spoiled heiress whose on the run from her famously rich father and on the trail from Florida to New York to meet with her eloped lover. She, however, encounters a newspaper reporter who offers to help her in exchange for an exclusive story. But along the way, they both seem to realize that they are falling in love with each other.

This film is a classic and I’ve watched it so many times, I feel like I could recite it. Clarke Gable is always a gem to watch and truly does an incredible job in his performance in the film (although Gone With The Wind is my favorite of his films). If you’re in the mood for a classic on the road film, be sure to check this one out!
