As I’ve mentioned before in a previous post about movies that feature traveling, the things that you watch or read have the magical ability to transport us to other time periods, listen to people’s stories and best of all travel to different places.
I feel like tv shows don’t get enough of a shout out when it comes to traveling; by that I mean, actually shooting a tv show or tv movie where its says its actually suppose to be. For example, as much as I love Friends, I know that all of the scenes shot in the caffe, on the streets, or in the apartments were all shot in a studio in Los Angeles, which can sometimes take away from the show.
However, I have complied a list of tv shows (and a few tv movies) around the world. Most if not all of these are in english and take place in an English speaking country, as much as I would love to find a great tv show about Americans in Paris, I haven’t found it yet.
But here are the shows that I did find!
If you’re in the mood for New York…
Fancy Upper East Side: Gossip Girl (2007 – 2012)
The lives of the rich and classy young adults whose lives intertwine and create all sorts of dramatic moments in the Upper East Side.
Love all over NYC: Sex and The City (1998 – 2004)
One of my absolute favorites! A true classic tv show of a girl who writes a column in the grand city of New York and along the way with her best friends encounters love and the true meaning of friendship.
College in NYU: Felicity (1998 – 2002)
If you didn’t watch it and just swoon over Ben or think Noel was charming, then you never really watched this amazing tv show about a girl who follows a boy cross country to New York City.
Realistic Brooklyn: Girls (2012 – 2017)
I recently just started and finished this series and it honestly feels like an indie film inspired tv series. With real life descriptions of the awful yet beauty of first loves, friendships and finding yourself.
If you’re in the mood for Los Angeles…
Funny LA: New Girl (2011-)
Follow the lives of these LA group of friends in all their hilarious encounters and mishaps.
Realistic LA: Love (2016-)
This is a true and hilarious gem on Netflix with two seasons that kept me laughing at 2am. A tv show about two people realistically trying to find love in modern day Los Angeles.
If you’re in the mood for United Kingdom…
Classic London: Sherlock (2010-)
This is one of the best tv series I have ever watched and if you haven’t already I highly recommend to binge watch it right now!
Colorful Realistic London: Chewing Gum (2016-)
A recent find on Netflix, which I have already watched twice. With only 12 episodes, its one of the funniest tv shows I’ve ever watched. Beware for some rude comedy that will leave you crying tears of laughter.
Posh 1910s -1920s English Countryside: Downton Abbey (2010-2015)
A tv show that follows the lives of a highly elite family and its servants throughout years of drama and war. Many of my peers can’t stand to even think about watching this show but you might be surprised and entertained by the amount of drama that comes from a classy show like this.
Back in Time Scotland: Outlander (2014-)
I haven’t watched past season one but the first season left me breathless and ready for more so be sure to check out this tv show about a married woman who gets transported centuries back in time where she finds the love of her life.
All Around the Universe (But mostly England): Doctor Who (Forever-)
I haven’t watched every single season of this spectacular show, however if you’re planning on beginning it, I recommend watching from the Ninth Doctor. Follow the Doctor as he travels around the universe along with his companions (#teamroseforever).
If you’re in the mood for Canada…
Prince Edward Island: Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea and Anne with An E
Yes, I am aware they are all based on the books of Lucy Maud Montgomery. But nothing beats the beautiful countryside of PEI.
Anne of Green Gables (1985 TV Movie)
I grew up watching this classic film about a young girl who finds out that the best thing to be is yourself. Although the film is older, it’s a true gem and I recommend everyone (especially young girls) to watch it. Be sure to also watch the sequel afterwards!
Road to Avonlea (1990 – 1996 TV Show)
Based around the same characters in the village of Avonlea (from the AOGG tv movie), where new characters encounter many different hilarious, loving and heartbreaking experiences.
Anne With An E (2017-)
A new version based on the books of Anne of Green Gables, comes a more serious, grimmer yet beautiful depiction of a girl who realizes she can do anything a boy can do.
If you’re in the mood for Australia…
By the Gold Coast: H20: Just Add Water (2006 – 2009)
I know this is a kids show, but I haven’t watched many Australian tv series and I truly have enjoyed watching and rewatching this show about mermaids even now in my 20s. Also check out the sequel Mako Mermaids on Netflix!
Well there you have it folks with some tv shows around the world! Thank you for reading and be sure to leave a few recommendations below of other tv shows to watch!
